Yeovil Bowls Club – Junior Bowls Bowls and old persons sport? Bowls played in quite and tranquil surroundings?? Bowls dull and boring? Is that your perception of this sport? Well, you should have been at the Yeovil Bowls Club on Monday 24th September when 28 children from St Gilda’s Year 6 took up the invitation of a taster, fun session. Coloured bowls; cheering, clapping and lots of fun were the order of the day. The children quickly picked up the basics and thoroughly enjoyed the skills tests which included bowling through a tunnel, into crates and onto a large wedge made out of foam. Each discipline was carefully put together by the resident coaches hoping that the children would enjoy their introduction to the sport, and judging by the noise, laughter and competitive rivalry, they clearly succeeded. At the end of the session each child was presented with a certificate of achievement with special certificates presented to Honor Pybus, Anju Jose and Cassie Wright, who had the top three scores of the day. The equipment and small coloured bowls were purchased from grants awarded by the Yeovil Town Council, The Somerset Community Foundation and The Yeovil Association. Their support and encouragement of youth sport is much appreciated. Junior Bowls is an up and coming, lively, colourful and competitive sport. With the correct coaching, enthusiasm and talent there is the opportunity to represent the Club, County and England at Under 25 level. The Yeovil Club hope that some of these children will attend the Monday Junior Sessions due to start on 1st October between 4-6pm. Perhaps we will uncover our very own World Champion! |
